THE MINDYS

The microaggressions that subconsciously cut the deepest are communicated by the things we least expect.

Gender based microaggressions are part of our culture. But they aren't isolated to beauty pageants, Kanye and reality television.

After seeing a friend's four-year-old niece wish she had hair like her life sized Princess Ariel doll I realized these microaggressions often infiltrate our lives through toys, sayings and comments. I collected lists of microagressions from 12 women of different backgrounds, races and sexual orientations. I asked them to provide up to ten phrases from their pasts that have shaped the women they are today. I crocheted a stuffed animal to represent each woman and created micro-controllers to place inside. When you squeeze the toy's tummy it speaks the microaggressions the women provided.
